Shortening leaf stalks

Mountain Liquidambar and Japanese Maples

Removing the thin stalk sheet enables growth slowly
Removing the thin protecting layer of stalk sheet at the base of the leaves causes the stalk to dry early when protection is gone. It is a very important technique to Mame and Shohin-Bonsai, and slows the growth and keeps the leaf stalks shorter.

The sheets can be removed with the help of a pair of tweezers.

Reducing leaf pairs

Decreasing to one leaf from one pair of leafs, develops shorter internodes as shown on the photo.

Notice that the upper left leaf has been cut off at this state of development.
