Juniper Design and Styling: Part Two – Arranging Branches and Foliage

Welcome back to our series on Juniper design and styling! In the first episode, I focused on the intricate and essential task of working on the deadwood. Now, in part two, we will build upon that foundation by arranging the branches and foliage to enhance the overall aesthetic and health of our Juniper bonsai.

A draft of the content in the members video:

Building on the Deadwood Work

The deadwood work we completed in the first episode not only added character and age to our Juniper but also set the stage for the next steps in our design process. With the deadwood now basically crafted, it’s time to turn our attention to the living parts of the tree.

Step 1: Assessing the Structure

Before we start arranging the branches, it’s crucial to assess the current structure of the tree. Look at the primary branches and their placement. Identify any branches that may need to be repositioned or pruned to create a balanced and harmonious design.

Step 2: Wiring the Branches

Wiring is an essential technique in bonsai styling. Carefully wire the branches, starting from the trunk and moving outwards. This will allow you to bend and position the branches as desired. Remember to use the appropriate thickness of wire for each branch to avoid damage.

Step 3: Positioning the Branches

With the branches wired, begin positioning them to create the desired shape. Aim for a natural look, with branches radiating outwards and slightly downwards. This mimics the way branches grow in nature and adds to the tree’s overall aesthetic.

Step 4: Refining

Once the branches are positioned, it’s time to prune any excess foliage dropping from the foliage pads to make those more clearly defined. This step is crucial for maintaining the tree’s aesthetics and at the same time ensuring that light can reach all parts of the tree. Prune selectively, focusing on areas where foliage is too dense.

Step 5: Final Touches

After arranging the branches and pruning, take a step back and assess the overall design. Make any final adjustments to ensure the tree looks balanced and natural. This is also a good time to check the wiring and make sure it’s not too tight, as this can damage the branches over time.

Conclusion

In this episode, we’ve taken our Juniper bonsai to the next level by arranging the branches and foliage. The combination of well-crafted deadwood and thoughtfully positioned branches creates a stunning and harmonious design.
