The Outdoor Tokonoma at Kisetsu-en Bonsai Garden
On request I have written a post about the outdoor Tokonoma created a few years ago
A Blend of Tradition and Innovation
In the serene Kisetsu-en Bonsai Garden, I crafted an outdoor Tokonoma that merges traditional Japanese aesthetics with innovative design. I hope it adds a special touch to the garden, enhancing the overall experience for visitors and bonsai enthusiasts alike but primarily set up for my personal enjoyment.
The Concept and Construction
The idea behind the outdoor Tokonoma was to create a dedicated space for displaying bonsai and Suiseki (viewing stones) in a manner that reflects the spirit of an indoor Tokonoma. Built during the summer of 2016, the Tokonoma was designed without precise sketches, allowing for a more organic and fluid construction process].
The structure measures approximately 200 x 90 cm (79 x 35 inches), with a table height of 70 cm (27.5 inches). The main pole, sourced from a garden tree (Beech), adds a natural touch to the display area. The poles are set in concrete to prevent soil contact and are treated with outdoor preserving paint to ensure durability. Using self preserving wood like Larch also is a possible solution, just take care of pole set in concrete or on top of stones to avoid direct contact with soil and taking up water from there avoiding it rotting over time.
Design Elements
The Tokonoma is centrally placed in the bonsai garden, making it a focal point for guests upon arrival. The roof is constructed from overlapping wooden planks, providing protection from the elements. The back and side walls are made of wooden boards, painted with several layers of protective outdoor paint. An open window cut out on the side wall, decorated with bamboo, adds to the aesthetic appeal. A side room was added later, for the sole purpose of having a small room for a single shohin bonsai.
Year-Round Use
One of the standout features of this outdoor Tokonoma is its versatility. It is use throughout the year for displaying bonsai and Suiseki. This flexibility allows for seasonal changes in the display, keeping the garden dynamic and engaging. Having an indoor Tokonoma too to decorate the workshop room doesn’t take away the use of the outdoor decoration room during winter when in the mood for that.
Inspiration and Impact
The outdoor Tokonoma at Kisetsu-en is a feature I have done due to my dedication to bonsai art and my approach to garden design. It serves as an inspiration for bonsai enthusiasts looking to incorporate traditional elements into their gardens without the need for large structures and have been copied and shared in other bonsai garden since. My inspiration came from a similar experience found online on a photo from the east.
The outdoor Tokonoma at Kisetsu-en Bonsai Garden is a blend of tradition and modernity, offering a unique space for displaying bonsai and Suiseki. The design and year-round usability make it a cherished feature of the garden, inspiring visitors and bonsai lovers worldwide.
