Bonsai Scots pine styling

Dear readers of my blog. I hope you enjoy the upcoming autumn/fall, despite the Corona still being around.

In Thursday’s episode (online from September 24th) I continue the work on a Scots pine collected in Sweden more than three years ago. Continuing the development from very raw and simple material towards a promising bonsai.

The development of a bonsai

The development of a bonsai can take many directions. With Yamadori collected pines great care have to be taken not being too hasty. Every three taken from the ground needs to reestablish a healthy root system before any styling is done. The good thing about collecting threes at hills and cliffs is that there can be a good chance of getting a compact root system because some of these trees are growing in shallow places where the cliffs have formed a natural “container”.

In this case, I was able to lift the tree out just cutting a single large root, and reduce the top at the spot. Today I have styled the tree a second time, and think there will a good future bonsai with a little patient work.

You can follow the process of styling and with all my explanation following. We go through the wiring process, the arrangement of branches, and the purpose of the design.

A guaranteed Corona free zone is the online tutorials available here at Kisetsu-en. I really hope for everybody that you stay safe and healthy. Bonsai activities probably are low regarding club meetings. Several of my international arrangements were canceled too. Therefore I decided to do something online instead.
