Geoff HobsonParticipant
Bit big for Kinsai, I will have a look in my book and get back to you
Geoff HobsonParticipantEric,
it could one of several, the size of the flowers helps a lot. It looks a bit like Kinsai but that is a guess as flower size is needed. Kinsai has quite small flowers and can be variable in shape,
Geoff
Geoff HobsonParticipantOliver,
are these the only trees affected or more? I would have them in the sun and if they are wet let them dry a bit. Does the water drain well when you water? You could drop it out of the pot and see if the roots look ok. One thought, if you take it out look for Vine Weevils in the soil.
Geoff HobsonParticipantI don’t know Oliver, maybe Morten can help. I will be on the Zoom Thursday night, hope to see you there and you could ask him.
Geoff HobsonParticipantOliver have you checked for insects? I expect you have but possible otherwise I don’t know. The third picture look as if had been eaten on the edge. Has the Crab AppleĀ flowered this year?
Geoff.
Geoff HobsonParticipantThanks, Jon, I might try a mixed forest too. Not this year now, but I can get the trees together ready. It will be interesting to see your Blue Beech.
Geoff HobsonParticipantWow, and we are worried about light frost. Still, I suppose you are used to it. We have had snow as late as 24th April in the past, but not for many years,
Geoff.
Geoff HobsonParticipantJon, yes, nice to talk to you and the others. I wanted to do a small Field Maple group but I could not get any small enough trees! So I went for a big group and also did several clumps. I am hoping to be able to cut down some of the ones left over once they have grown and established a bit, later on this year or maybe next. There is a nursery that had some small ones but I could not go there and they would not send a small order.
Geoff.
Geoff HobsonParticipantLet’s see a picture of it,
Geoff.
Geoff HobsonParticipantDom,
should be a bit milder in the next few days so you could still do the re pots next week once the threat of frost is less. Just don’t prune a lot of roots, and keep some of the rootball untouched if possible. I do not add any fertiliser until the leaves have opened and hardened off. There is no real need as they should have enough stored energy to sustain growth until leaves are open and able to photosynthesise.
I am in North Dorset and we have had frosts for the last 4 or 5 nights but only light. Hopefully, tonight will be frost free,
Geoff.
Geoff HobsonParticipantI have found it
Geoff HobsonParticipantMorten,
that was good, well worth doing. Nice to see some other people even if it was not that many. I saw that you were recording are you going to put it in the library? I must come up with a couple more questions, or show some of my trees, we will see.
Geoff.
Geoff HobsonParticipantOk, David, hope to see you Thursday night in the Zoom meeting,
Geoff HobsonParticipantOk, well, I have bought trees from all sorts, from bonsai nurseries and auctions and friends as well as when we have been to shows in this country and the rest of Europe. We went to a large nursery in Holland several years ago and bought some nice trees. So I get them from all over. I recently bought some hedging bare root Field Maples to make into clumps and a forest on a large piece of wood. I don’t but from any internet seller unless I am desperate for the speciesĀ and I know who the seller is. I have only bought two like that in 20 years and both were last year,
Geoff.
Geoff HobsonParticipantI have about 150 trees, all sizes and stages of development. I have been growing for 20 years plus now. My favourite species is Larch, I have a lot. I do like deciduous, and I have a lot, Scots Pines too.
It must be quite difficult on the coast with salt water spray, especially when you get east winds blowing.
If you go into any garden centre you should find fleece for frost protection. It comes in a roll. As an alternative newspaper over the leaves will help. If you look in Amazon you should find it as well.
