The late winter coniferous bonsai jobs to do

February is proceeding and the last weeks of winter are ahead of us in this part of the world. Before we start the repotting season for real there are some jobs to do at our bonsai.

The subject of the Saturday live streaming was Junipers because it is a good time to work on these before spring hits. The reason is that the branches of Junipers are flexible at this time, so wiring and repositioning branches can be done safely.

When spring growth starts it’s better to leave them alone and strengthen up until summer. All explained in the live stream recorded. Watch it and all other content published in the BONSAI ON library.

Timing

All coniferous trees may be worked on during this period of winter, but only reduce foliage if necessary. Generally, for conifers, it’s important to let the new growth grow freely until summer before adjusting the foliage mass. Making them able to exchange auxin and cytokinin hormones between roots and foliage. An important biological event not to be missed. It is essential for achieving back budding and strengthening overall health.

The timing of the jobs done on bonsai is important to know about. If we do things in the wrong order and against the growth pattern we will miss the benefit of doing it.

That’s why all education at BONSAI ON is timely and connected to the seasons. So we do things when they should be done.
