New shohin bonsai potters – Martine Geoffroy and Nick Hopes

New pots show up now and then. There are many talented potters around, and one new to me I spotted at the recent Trophy event in Genk, Belgium.

Her name is Martine Geoffroy and comes from France. Another one I have followed on Instagram for some time is Nick Hopes. A great guy I had some pleasant talks with at the Trophy.

Exploring new Shohin pots

Nick Hopes, a bonsai Brit in Spain, as his Instagram profile says. Both potters have excellent taste and finish. Europe has a long and fine tradition of ceramics and the craftsmanship is high. Important when creating pots for bonsai that need that precise and fine expression.

The pot from Nick Hopes, Maidenhair bonsai pots, is yellow with small raised feets. A pot demanding something different. Will be official later what was done. Members at Kisetsu-en BONSAI ON though will be able to watch a video created last week, with a new creation using this pot. This pot will also be featured in my next Shohin bonsai book planned to be released in early 2024.

The next live stream Thursday at 8 PM (CET) will focus on thin trunks

Thin trunks often are something we reject for bonsai. We need old sturdy, powerful fat trunks to express age.

But bonsai is so much more than that. Creating Literati-style bonsai makes use of slim trunks. With Shohin it’s possible to design elegant and whimsical small trees with the use of simple materials.

Explore different ways of using thin trunks for elegant shohin bonsai in the weekly Live stream.

Live stream – Thursday, March 23, 8 PM / 20:00 (CET)

All live streams are recorded and available to watch in the video library shortly after the live stream ends. Usually within two hours.
